The PC/SC Workgroup recognizes that a substantial ICC (smart card) industry and applications base already exists.
To take advantage of this, the Workgroup based its efforts on the interoperability standards defined by ISO 7816. This was felt to be the most appropriate standard, due to its broad use by micro-processor based ICC vendors.
In addition, we recognize that there are important standardization efforts, based upon ISO 7816, which address the needs of specific vertical markets.
Therefore, the focus of Workgroup efforts has been on the intermediate layers. Workgroup efforts are intended to co-exist with and enhance the ability to integrate applications – built on standards such as EMV and GSM – with the PC.
